Reasons to Join the Home Builders Association
One of the major services provided by your Home Builders Association of Kentucky is advocacy. The HBAK has represented members and the industry in front of government agencies and elected bodies for years, saving them tens of thousands of dollars.
The staff of the Association has worked on many pieces of legislation, including a Workers Compensation Reform bill, which passed and led directly to a 40% decrease in members’ insurance premiums.
In 2005, the Association worked with other business groups to exempt our small business members from an onerous gross receipts tax.
Most recently, Kentucky was one of only three states to adopt a home buyer tax credit to mirror the one on the federal level.
We consistently have HBAK staff representing the housing industry so you can continue to do your job without excessive government interference.
The AGC-SIF Insurance Fund, which is the workers’ compensation insurance fund endorsed by the HBAK, is designed to save you money on your annual premiums. For the past 17 years, the workers’ compensation program has returned over $113.9 million in insurance dividends to our members. In 2012, we returned $14.8 million, with a member’s average check being $4,000.
Our group health insurance through Anthem provides you an opportunity to get a competitive quote for you, your family, and your employees. There are many plans from which to choose to best suit your needs. And you get the negotiating power of a big corporation when all of the small employers are put together in a group program.
The Association endorses the SuperFleet Program through Marathon, Speedway, Pilot, and Valvoline gas stations. When you obtain a card through the Home Builders Association Fleet Program, you can save up to 10 cents per gallon of fuel.
The official newspaper of the Home Builders Association of Kentucky is the Kentucky Builders Journal. This prize-winning newspaper is mailed to all members to keep you abreast of new products, code regulations, and timely information regarding the home building industry.
The National Association of Home Builders has agreements with a variety of different companies to provide extra savings to members (see icon at the bottom of this page for a link).
The General Motors program will save you $500 on the purchase of a new vehicle, and there are savings when you buy computer equipment through Dell and Hewlett-Packard. To find out more about these discounts, visit this link.
A registered builder is not simply a title that can be purchased and displayed on company vehicles and in advertising. A registered builder is a professional designation granted to a builder who meets specific requirements. In order to become a registered builder, an applicant must meet the minimum standards set by the Home Builders Association of Kentucky and may also have additional standards set by the local association. This designation provides the consumer with confidence, knowing that their builder is a skilled professional and will stand behind their product. If you are not a registered builder or remodeler, please contact your local HBA for details.
The HBAK awards three scholarships each year to a college student who has an interest in the residential housing industry. To qualify for the scholarships, the applicant must be a son/daughter, grandson/granddaughter, or the employee of an HBAK member.
The three scholarships are named to honor the following.
- Betty Bell Scholarship: $500
- Tommy Thompson Scholarship: $1,000
- Tommy Bright Scholarship: $1,000
- Murray Riffee Scholarship: $1,000 (awarded each year to an EKU Construction Management student)
The application deadline for these scholarships is April 15 each year. You can learn more about each scholarship by visiting this page.
Your local HBA has a variety of programs designed to save you money, too. Contact your local HBA to find out more about your savings opportunities, from education programs to product offers.
